CHAPTER 17
As Odelia put the finishing touches to her article about the upcoming cat show, she sat back and interlaced her hands behind her head. She closed her tired eyes for a moment and breathed deeply. Taking stock, she wondered how Grace would be faring at the daycare, how her husband would be doing at the police station, her mom at the library, her grandmother and Dad at the doctorâs office and her cats wherever they were and whatever they were doing.
It was her way of mentally keeping track of everyone who was important in her life. Her career might mean a lot to her, but it would always take second place to her family, and frankly speaking if she could be with them right now she would gladly exchange any laurels her achievements at the Gazette awarded her for more time spent with her dear ones. So it was a pleasant surprise to her when her door suddenly burst open and two of those dear ones walked in.
âDad! Gran!â she said, well pleased. âSo nice of you to pay me a visit.â
âThis is not a social call,â Gran announced, and the downcast look she gave her was testament to the grave nature of this statement. Following on the heels of Odeliaâs relatives Scarlett now also walked in, looking equally perturbed.
âWhatâs wrong?â asked Odelia, immediately fearing the worst. âIs it Grace? Is it Chase? What happened!â
âItâs my patients,â said Dad. âThey seem to have gone missing.â
âMissing? What do you mean?â She hated it when people spoke in riddles, as her family members were doing now.
Dad raised his arms. âTheyâre gone! Normally Iâve got a waiting room full of people every single day, but today Iâve got nothing. Zip. If Iâve seen two patients it will be a lot.â
âWeâre thinking there might be a new doctor in town,â said Scarlett. She spoke hesitantly, carefully picking her words and darting anxious glances at Odeliaâs dad, like you would at an erratic teenager you donât wish to provoke by saying the wrong thing. Or a bomb you donât wish to set off by hitting it with a hammer.
But Dad wasnât exploding like a bomb but more imploding, like a different bomb, the imploding kind. He sank down on the chair in front of Odeliaâs desk now and burst into tears. âMy life is over! Iâll have to find a job. Iâll have to send out my resume and prostitute myself on the job market like a normal person!â
Odelia bristled a little bit. âI work for a living, Dad, and I wouldnât call what Iâm doing prostituting myself.â
âWell, I would,â he said defiantly. He wiped at his tears and raised his head. âA Poole has never had to apply for a job and beg to be hired. Us Pooles have always been able to take care of ourselves, going back to the first Poole who set foot on these shores we have always been men of medicine.â
It was true that Odeliaâs grandfather, now deceased,
